A Bug's Life

I need to warn you in the beginning. If you hate insects or just don't like to look at them reading this post will not be necessarily pleasant for you. I wanted to show you how many designers are inspired by insects, little ugly but so detailed and complex creatures. I came up with an idea to write about this after watching the last Lanvin collection. I actually realised that so many designers did that before. Especially we can see so much "insects inspired" jewellery. Some of the pieces are rather repulsive but you can find a lot of amazing ones as well.

This plastic necklace belongs to Elsa Schiaparelli's pagan collection from 1938. I think it can be said that she was a first designer who created a jewellery piece with multi-coloured insects. Necklace is made of Rhodoid, a cellulose acetate transparent plastic and it gives an impression of insects resting on the wearer's skin. I still can't believe that this necklace was created in 1938. You can find it in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in Brooklyn.

When talking about bugs I definitely need to mention Alexander McQueen collections. Both him and Sarah Burton (who is a current creative director of the brand) created amazing collections definitely inspired by these little creatures.
